About Us

The Department of Respiratory Medicine of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University Medical School was established in early 1960’s. Since its inception this department has continually set the standard for excellence in the profession, especially in the clinical care and basic researches of pulmonary diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary infection, respiratory failure, lung cancer, rare and stubborn disease, severe lung disease, etc. In 2003, the Institute of Respiratory Medicine of Zhejiang University was established. Today, the department has become the key department of Medical College, Zhejiang University, and one of the Key Medical Departments in Zhejiang province. The department provides inpatients and outpatients services to a variety of patients suffered with lung disease from native or neighbor provinces. The department has been renamed as Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine in 2011.

The Department is comprised of several parts, including the Pulmonary Disease Clinic, Respiratory Disease Inpatient Ward with 86 beds, MICU beds 22, obstructive sleep apnea hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS) Monitor Center equipped with advanced Monitoring System, Pulmonary Function Testing Lab, Bronchofibroscope Examining Lab, and Respiratory Medicine research Lab.

The department is now directed by Dr. Huahao Shen, a renowned respiratory scientist in China, and consists of six professors, 12 associate professors and more than 120 faculty members. The department has an active program of clinical research. Through research based practice and a commitment to continuing education, the department has remained in the worldwide forefront of some fields, such as pathogenesis of asthma and early prevention of asthma. Moreover, we are well-known in our country in the field of pulmonary local immunology, pathogenesis and etiology of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, antibiotics and antasthmatics. In addition, we are good at whole lung lavage, airway reactivity examination, detection of respiratory atypical pathogen infection, research in drug resistance to aeruginous Pseudomonas, diagnosis and combined therapy of OSAS, and induced sputum examination. Meanwhile, the members of the department have rich experience in allergen detection of asthma, transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB), bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), protected specimen brush (PSB), airway constriction management by metal frame implantation, per cutem lung biopsy, pulmonary function test, diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary infection, bacterial drug resistance monitoring from hospital infection.

Distinctive clinical services

l        Chronic or stubborn cough. There are over 100 kinds of causes that might result in chronic cough. We have established the integrated procedures to identify the pathogenesis and to release the suffering of the patients.

l        Normalized treatment and long-term administration for asthma and COPD patients, especially those suffered with stubborn asthma. The ¡¡ãAsthma Club¡¡À and ¡¡ãCOPD Club¡¡À were founded respectively in 1994 and 1999 regularly provide free care and health education for patients.

l        Rare and stubborn pulmonary diseases. For these cases of uncertain etiology, we have established the advanced ¡¡ãteam practice¡¡À system to consult with the experts from different subjects. Accordingly, we have successfully dealt with some rare diseases, including pulmonary microlithiasis, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, bronchial amyloidosis, lung-bronchial leiomyoadenoma, and lung histoplasmosis.

l        The application of high-capacity lung lavage technique. The department is one of the rare units that provide this service. The technique has been effectively involved in the treatment of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, severe inhalation pneumonia and severe lung infection.

l        Bronchoscopy interventional therapy. The department has developed the technologies of transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB), transbronchial bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), transbronchial pollution resist brush£¡§PSB£©, and treatment of airway constriction with implantation of memorial metal frame. With the last technology, we successfully dealt with the oldest patient of 82 years old in China who is still alive.

l        Diagnosis and treatment of OSAHS based on multiple disciplines. The department is equipped with OSAHS Monitoring Instrument which is most advanced in China. We have also established the integrated evaluation and treatment system that consists of multiple disciplines, including Respiratory Medicine, E.N.T., stomatology, neurology, psychiatry and Gerontology. This system will finally evaluate the monitoring data and work out the therapeutic procedures.
